SRI ANJANEYA Return to Articles Index
Šri Ănjaneya If the great epic Rămayana describing the saga of Šri Răma, is considered as a priceless necklace, Šri Ănjaneya is viewed as its pendant and centerpiece, not only because of the key role played by Šri Hanumăn in locating the whereabouts of Mother Sita and comforting Her, but due to the mighty prowess he demonstrated in the ensuing war between Šri Răma and the forces of Răvana. The greatness of Šri Ănjaneya is such that Šri Răma could not have achieved victory without help from Šri Ănjaneya.

In fulfillment of the boon Lord Šiva gave to Anjana, a vănara woman, Lord Šiva deputed Văyu Deva to convey to Anjana a eleventh part of Rudra Veerya (the potency of Rudra). In course of time Anjana gave birth to Šri Ănjaneya who exuded brilliance and showed valor from his infant days. While he learnt all the vedas, šăstras and other scriptures and became an exponent in music, he was also living the normal life of a vănara child. Impressed by the wisdom and leadership qualities of Šri Ănjaneya, the vănara chief Sugriva enlisted Šri Ănjaneya as his minister and when Sugriva was banished from the kingdom by his brother Văli, Šri Ănjaneya loyally followed his master Sugriva and took residence with him in the Rishyamooka mountain.

It was due to Šri Ănjaneya's appearance, manner and demeanor that Šri Răma and Lakshmana befriended Sugriva and helped him regain his lost kingdom. Šri Răma's unshakable confidence in Šri Ănjaneya's ability prompted Him to select Šri Ănjaneya as His special messenger to go to Lankăpuri in order to locate, meet and assuage the sorrowful Mother Sita and convince Her that Šri Răma was soon arriving to redeem Her. Šri Ănjaneya fully justified Šri Răma's confidence in him by single handedly accomplishing this mission and was profusely praised by Mother Sita for his valor, strength, courage and powers of discernment and discrimination. Once again Šri Răma chose Šri Ănjaneya as his emissary to go to Bharata to announce Šri Răma's impending return to Ayodhya. For these reasons Šri Ănjaneya became known as Šri Răma Doota.

Šri Ănjaneya's strength flowed from his intense faith in and devotion to Šri Răma, on whose name he was constantly meditating. It was no wonder that Brahmajnăna was revealed to Šri Ănjaneya by Šri Răma Himself May we all pray to Šri Ănjaneya and receive his blessings for happiness and success in all our endeavors.
