SAHASRA GANAPATI POOJA Return to Articles Index
Om Maha Vallabha Ganapathi In felicitation of the advent of the New Millennium of the Georgian calendar, Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanamm performed Sahasra Ganapati Pooja, as part of a special three-day celebration for Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati seeking His blessings for world peace and welfare of the entire humanity.

Our sages have observed that only spiritual enlightenment can lead one to that exalted state of supreme happiness or Divine Bliss.

Our astral or subtle bodies (sukshma sariras) have six chakras or centers of subtle energy called kundalini sakti, situated in the sushmna nadi and the seventh chakra located just above the crown of the head. These seven chakras are: Muladhara, Svadhisthana, Manipura, Anahata, Visuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara. For the spiritually un-evolved, the kundalini rests coiled up in the Muladhara Chakra and the goal of all sadhanas like japa, dhyana, kirtan, pooja etc. is to awaken this sakti and make it pass through all the succeeding chakras culminating in Sahasrara Chakra, where it blazes forth in full splendor. This awakening, however, will not occur without the grace of the Lord and one’s guru.

Each of these chakras is envisioned as a lotus with different number of petals and colors. Muladhara is a crimson-red colored lotus with four petals and its beejakshara or root letter is Lam, which is also Lord Ganesa’s beejakshara. The scriptures declare that Lord Ganesa resides in this chakra - see Atharva Seersha Upanishad above.

In this special pooja, 1,008 idols of Lord Ganesa are installed in a Yantra called Chaturdala Padma Yantra (four petaled formation) and worshipped. By worshipping Him in this manifestation, one receives His blessings and gets an upward thrust to the kundalini sakti. Thereafter, with the grace of one’s guru the kundalini reaches the Sahasrara Chakra at which stage the aspirant becomes fully enlightened and experiences Divine Bliss.

As the world gets filled with such enlightened beings, it becomes a peaceful and prosperous place for one and all. May Lord Ganesa accept our prayers and bless the world with peace, happiness and prosperity in the New Millennium.
