ŠRI ŠRINIVĂSA KALYĂNAM Return to Articles Index

Lord Nărăyana had incarnated Himself as Šri Răma in the Tretă Yuga with the sole objective of destroying the demons like Răvana and others, who were oppressing the sages on earth. In accordance with the Divine plan, as Răvana was about to abduct Mother Sita, Agni the fire-god skillfully took away with him the real Mother Sita and substituted a Măyă Sita in Her place. This Măyă Sita, was none other than Vedavati who was waiting for an opportunity to take revenge on Răvana for his inappropriate behavior towards her at an earlier time.

After Răvana had been killed, Mother Sita requested Šri Răma to accept Vedavati as His wife as a reward for all the sufferings she had undergone for the sake of Mother Sita. Šri Răma could not do so, however, because of His Eka Patni Vrata (vow of staying married to one wife) in that incarnation but promised Mother Sita that He would incarnate Himself as Šri Šrinivăsa at a later time and would marry Vedavati.

At the close of Dwăpara Yuga, king Ăkăšarăja of the lunar race was desirous of progeny and was advised by his preceptors to perform a sacrifice. As the king was preparing the sacrificial ground, he found a 1000-petaled lotus with a divine looking female child in it. The child was none other than Vedavati. In compliance with the celestial voice he heard, the king brought up the child as his own and named her Padmăvati since she was found on a padma or lotus.

At about the same time, as the result of a misunderstanding between Lord Vishnu and Šri Mahălakshmi, the latter left Vaikuntha in anger and descended on earth. The grief-stricken Lord also came down to earth as Šri Šrinivăsa, in search of His consort and was tended to by Vakulamălika (Yašoda in her earlier birth) at Šri Venkatagiri.

In course of time Šri Šrinivăsa wandering the earth in the form of a hunter, happened to meet Padmăvati and immediately they fell in love with each other. Thereafter, Šri Šrinivăsa related to Vakulamălika the purpose of His avatar and sent her to king Ăkăšarăja seeking Padmăvati's hands. Before Vakulamălika could reach the king's palace, the Lord in the form of a soothsayer, approached the queen and forewarned her that unless the king consented to Vakulamălika's request, misfortune would befall the kingdom. Accordingly, the royal couple was very happy to accept Vakulamălika's proposal and sent their preceptor sage Šuka to the Lord to escort Him to the wedding. At the invitation of Šri Srinivăsa, Lord Šiva, Lord Brahma, Indra and all other gods assembled on earth and proceeded to make the wedding arrangements on a grand scale.

On the wedding day, the Šri Šrinivăsa enacted a ruse in order to make Šri Mahălakshmi abandon Her anger toward Him and become a willing and active participant in the wedding between the Him and Padmăvati performed in the presence of all the gods.

Any one who narrates, listens to or reads about Šri Šrinivăsa Kalyănam, will be blessed by the Lord with immeasurable prosperity.
