Gajamukha Asura approaches Lord Siva seated in Kailasa with Parvati and Obtains a boon from Lord Siva that he may not be killed by Gods or humans or demons or any weapon. Armed with this boon, he starts ooppressing the three worlds.

This prompts Lord Ganesa to assume an elephant-faced form in order to kill Asura. The elephant-faced Lord Ganesa appears before Gajamukha Asura, breaks His right tusk and hurls it at Gajamukha killing him instantly. Thus Lord Ganesa gets the name Ekadanta.

The corpse of Gajamukha Asura takes the form of a mouse and approaches Lord Ganesa. Lord Ganesa blesses the mouse and mounts on it as His Vahana. All the Gods shower them with flowers.
